DESCRIPTION
Spanish School, XVI century.
"Virgin with child".
Carved and polychrome wood.
Measurements: 60 cm (height).
The work reflects the transition from late Gothic to full Renaissance. In this period, the sculptors abandoned the medieval rigidity in favor of more rounded forms, individualized faces and a more naturalistic treatment of the drapery. The Virgin Mary: She is presented standing, dressed in a golden tunic and a red mantle that falls in harmonic folds, symbol of her spiritual importance and her relationship with sacrifice. Her face shows a serene and sweet expression, typical of the Spanish Renaissance ideal of beauty. The Infant Jesus: He appears naked or semi-naked on his mother's arm, a humanist representation that emphasizes the affectionate bond and tenderness between the two.
