DESCRIPTION
Pair of plateresque columns; Spain, second third of the sixteenth century.
Carved and gilded wood.
They present faults in the carving and damages caused by xylophagous.
Measurements: 77 x 10 cm (x2).
This pair of columns is fully inscribed in the development of the Spanish Plateresque style, one of the most singular manifestations of the Hispanic Renaissance, characterized by the assimilation of Italian models reinterpreted through an exuberant decorative tradition of medieval roots.
Carved in wood and richly gilded, the columns present a profuse decoration based on finely executed reliefs, with plant motifs, grotesques and elements of classical inspiration, arranged in an orderly manner on the shaft. The quality of the carving and the application of the gilding show the intervention of a specialized workshop, probably linked to architectural or retablistic contexts of a religious or noble nature.
