DESCRIPTION
JOSEP MARÍA SUBIRACHS SITJAR (Barcelona, 1927–2014).
“Apostle—Sagrada Familia.”
Bronze and wooden base.
Measurements: 24 x 11.5 x 7 cm; 3 x 13.5 x 9 cm (base).
Through geometric forms and striking expressiveness, the artist seeks to convey the spiritual and conceptual dimension of the apostolic figure rather than his physical appearance. The work is part of the sculptural ensemble created for the Passion Facade of the Basilica of the Sagrada Familia, one of the most significant projects in Subirachs’ career. In 1986, the temple’s Construction Board commissioned him to create the sculptures that Antoni Gaudí had left barely sketched in his drawings. Far from faithfully reproducing the organic and naturalistic style of the Modernist architect, Subirachs chose to develop his own aesthetic—one that is contemporary and fully in line with the artistic trends of the late 20th century. This decision transformed the Sagrada Familia into a space where different artistic sensibilities engage in dialogue and where the passage of time is reflected in the evolution of its forms.
During more than twenty years of work on the basilica, Subirachs created not only the sculptures of the Passion Facade, but also the monumental bronze doors of this facade, the doors of the Glory Facade, the sculpture of Saint George located inside the basilica, the half-bust dedicated to Gaudí, and other highly significant sculptural elements, such as the representations of the apostles and the sculpture of the Ascension, located on the bridge connecting the central bell towers.
The artistic and heritage significance of this work was recognized through its designation as a Site of Cultural Interest. Furthermore, the works created by Subirachs at the Sagrada Família have been designated as a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Generalitat de Catalunya, cementing his fundamental role in the monument’s contemporary history and in Catalan artistic heritage.
