This relief was part of the sculptural decoration of a temple processional chariot, a fundamental element of certain religious festivals in southern India. These large, mobile structures were conceived as true wooden architectural works and were covered with carved panels depicting deities, mythological episodes, guardians, and figures associated with worship. The Metropolitan Museum and other international collections preserve fragments of ritual chariots from southern India dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, which were likewise conceived as independent reliefs within larger ensembles.

The composition is organized around an enthroned deity, highlighted through a hierarchical scale and surrounded by secondary figures and profuse vegetal and architectural ornamentation. Deep carving creates strong hallmarks of light and shadow, while the accumulation of motifs, jewelry, headdresses, and drapery contributes to the ceremonial character of the scene. The relief retains the direct expressiveness and ornamental density characteristic of religious wood sculpture from southern India, where this type of decoration integrated imagery, architecture, and ritual.

The provenance of the Eudald Serra bequest adds special interest to the piece. A sculptor, traveler, and ethnographer, Serra was closely associated with the Museu Etnològic de Barcelona and participated in numerous documentation and acquisition campaigns in Asia, Africa, and the Americas.
