BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

TOM SHARPE (1928-2013).
"Cambridge, 1960s."
Photograph.
Signed.
Dimensions: 39 x 25 cm; 66 x 50 cm (frame).
Provenance: Galeria Carles Taché.
Private collection, Barcelona.

Although best known as the author of best-selling satirical novels such as Wilt and Porterhouse Blue, Tom Sharpe was also a prolific and talented photographer. Prior to his literary fame, Sharpe worked as a photographer in South Africa (1951-1961) documenting the apartheid regime until his deportation. After returning to England, he lived in Cambridge and taught history at Cambridge College of Arts and Technology (1963-1972). This photograph dates from that specific period ("Cambridge 60's"). This work is a rare example of Sharpe's visual work. Although the police destroyed much of his South African photographs, those he took in England (specifically Cambridge) were preserved. Exhibitions of his photographic work (such as those at the Taché Gallery in Barcelona) have helped to cement his reputation as a photographer who captured in images the same social absurdities that he later captured in ink.
