The collection of data and news that Nicolás Antonio compiles in these monumental bibliographies, still unsurpassed works, makes him the father of Spanish bibliography and announces the transformation of literary criticism that, from him, ceases to be creation to become rigorous and systematized erudition. For all Spanish bibliographers, Nicolás Antonio's work became a model for its methodology, and an example for the enormous amount of biographical, scientific and literary data it provides. Even today, three centuries after its publication, it continues to be an essential reference. The Bibliotheca Hispana Vetus (1672) is chronologically prior to the Nova and includes Spanish writers who wrote from the time of Augustus (63 B.C.-14 A.D.) until 1500 and is divided into two volumes.
