Empire armchair, Royal Workshops of Madrid, ca. 1810.
Mahogany wood and gilded wood.
Presents restorations.
Provenance: Commissioned by King Ferdinand VII for the Royal Palace of Aranjuez, Sebastián Gabriel de Borbón, private collection London and private collection Madrid.
Measurements: 106 x 64 x 50 cm.
Empire style armchair, manufactured in the prestigious Royal Workshops of Madrid, authentic references in the production of high quality furniture and luxury objects for the Spanish court as well as for the most demanding international markets. These royal manufactures guaranteed a level of technical excellence, selection of noble materials and aesthetic care that today make their pieces privileged testimonies of the art of furniture.
The armchair has a solid structure in mahogany wood, enriched with finely carved and perfectly defined details in gilded wood, which are evidence of the mastery of the royal craftsmen. Its design fully responds to the Empire taste, characterized by balanced volumes, refined lines and a sober interpretation of classical aesthetics, inspired by the Egyptian and Greco-Roman world, symbols of power, order and permanence.
Although the straight lines typical of the style predominate, they are elegantly nuanced by the moldings of the legs and the delicate scrolls that ornament the armrests, bringing rhythm and sophistication to the whole. The original upholstery, which covers the seat and backrest in a refined cream tone, is especially noteworthy, adorned with a subtle embroidered decoration that enhances the distinguished and noble character of the piece.
