Hispano-Flemish desk from the second half of the XVII century, conceived as a piece of apparatus destined to a representation space. The piece of furniture, as usual, is structured in architectural form, with a central body and lateral wings articulated by means of a profuse succession of drawers, pediments and sculptural elements, rising on a table of Solomonic legs that reinforces its monumentality and scenic presence.
The surface combines with remarkable virtuosity the dark depth of the ebonized wood with the warm glow of the tortoiseshell and the ornamental rhythm of the bronze, generating a strong visual contrast that was highly appreciated in Baroque noble interiors. The upper body includes a devotional painting representing "The miracle of the fountain of San Isidro", an iconography linked to the popular religiosity of Madrid and the affirmation of the identity of the Hispanic Monarchy.
This type of writing desk arose in the context of the intense artistic exchange between the Spanish territories and the southern Netherlands, where the Flemish tradition of luxury furniture merged with the Hispanic taste for formal severity, material richness and iconographic load. Intended to project the social status, culture and piety of its owner.
From the artistic point of view, the extraordinary quality of execution, the precision of the tortoiseshell marquetry, the richness of the decorative repertoire in bronze and the compositional coherence of the whole stand out. Aesthetically, the piece is impressive for its solemnity, its ornamental density and its balance between architecture, sculpture and painting. Hispano-Flemish desks of this category are especially valued for their rarity and technical complexity and constitute authentic manifestos of the material culture of the European Baroque.
