DESCRIPTION
Ceiling lamp. France, Art Nouveau period, ca. 1900.
Gilded brass and satin glass.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use and patina.
Measurements: 129 x 120 x 120 cm.
Suspension lamp of Art Nouveau period, made of gilded brass and acid-etched glass. It presents a circular structure of great compositional lightness, formed by an upper ring from which radial arms and curved stems depart, topped by hanging lampshades of translucent glass. These lampshades, of oval and pointed profile, show incised vegetal decoration, with motifs of leaves and stems in soft relief, which nuance the light and reinforce the organic character of the whole.
The piece stands out especially for its modernist conception: the curved metal stems, the golden applications in the form of leaves and flowers, and the suspended arrangement of the lampshades generate a dynamic and vegetal composition. Seen from below, it offers a suggestive image of a rosette or large flower, with the central ceiling as the core and the arms arranged radially as petals or stamens.
Because of its large format and ornamental richness, it is an outstanding piece of decorative lighting, conceived for a bourgeois interior or representative of the dawn of the twentieth century.
