Swivel armchair. England, Victorian period, ca. 1870
Pine wood frame, mahogany veneer, and dyed leather upholstery.
Full spring padding.
Shows signs of wear and tear.
Measurements: 89 x 71 x 63 cm.
Victorian-era English swivel armchair, dating to around 1870, crafted from wood with mahogany veneer and a seat upholstered in dyed leather. The piece belongs to a style typically associated with office or library furniture, where functional comfort is combined with a decorative presence of strong character.
The curved, enveloping backrest, the extended arms, and the central base with four curved legs lend dynamism to the piece. Of particular interest is the openwork backrest, decorated with historicist-inspired floral carvings, in keeping with the Victorian taste for reinterpreting styles of the past.
The leather upholstery, secured with tacks, reinforces its function as a work or reading chair, while the swivel mechanism adds to its typological value. The piece retains the appeal of late 19th-century English furniture: sturdiness, functional elegance, and restrained yet distinguished ornamentation. It shows signs of wear and tear typical of its age and use.
