DESCRIPTION
PEDRO RAMÓN JOSÉ RIGUAL, known as PABLO RIGUAL (Barcelona, 1863–Paris, 1917).
Pair of Art Nouveau table lamps, ca. 1900.
Patinated bronze, with lampshades made of pearlescent seashells and metal mounts.
Signed on the base.
Wired for use.
They exhibit signs of use and slight wear on the patina.
Measurements: 43 x 18 x 18 cm.
Each lamp features a female figure draped in a dress of undulating folds, whose raised arms extend like stems to support the lampshade. The shells, with their intensely pearlescent surfaces, are embraced by mounts shaped like leaves and sinuous plant forms.
The contrast between the dark patina of the bronze and the natural iridescence of the shells reinforces the organic character of the piece. The integration of the female figure, the plant world, and marine materials fully embodies the Art Nouveau style, which transformed the lamp into an object with a distinctly sculptural presence. Pablo Rigual created various figurative bronze lamps within this same ornamental style.
