BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

ÉMILE GALLÉ (Nancy, France, 1846–1904).
"Talking" side table, ca. 1900.
Carved walnut wood, with fruitwood marquetry.
Signed “E. Gallé, Nancy” on one side.
Exhibits wear consistent with age and use.
Measurements: 72 x 56 x 56 cm.

Two-tiered side table, supported by three gently curved legs and featuring a trilobed upper tabletop. The legs incorporate carved floral motifs that extend the naturalistic repertoire developed on the marquetry surfaces.

The main tabletop features an asymmetrical composition of poppies, stems, and leaves, crafted from woods of varying tones and grains. The flowers unfold diagonally, accompanied by a poetic inscription integrated into the marquetry itself. This combination of image and word allows the piece to be classified among the so-called “meubles parlants,” in which Gallé imbued everyday objects with a literary and symbolic dimension. The curved lines of the tabletop and base, the plant-inspired design of the supports, and the expressive use of the wood grain are fully in keeping with the language of Art Nouveau and the École de Nancy.

Émile Gallé was one of the great European innovators in the decorative arts and a key figure in Art Nouveau. A glassmaker, ceramist, and cabinetmaker, he founded and presided over the École de Nancy, through which he championed the union of art, nature, and industry. His furniture is housed, among other institutions, at the Musée d’Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Musée de l’École de Nancy, which holds a significant collection of his work.
