This English tea box, dated ca. 1830, is a refined example of the domestic objects associated with the social ritual of tea in England in the first third of the 19th century.
Made of rosewood, a material prized for its density, dark grain and lustrous finish, it has a compact and well-proportioned structure, designed for both everyday use and display.
It displays a balance between functionality and decorative sobriety that is characteristic of the British taste of the period, influenced by late neoclassicism and an aesthetic of discreet distinction.
The piece is thus in the tradition of English tea caddies, objects that reflect both the rise of global commerce and the importance of domestic ritual in the bourgeois culture of late Georgian England.
