DESCRIPTION
Baroque frame. Spain, late seventeenth century.
Carved and gilded wood.
Presents damage by xylophagous.
Measurements: 150 x 123 x 27 cm.
This sumptuous frame belongs to a moment of full maturity of the Baroque, characterized by the taste for decorative exuberance, theatricality and integration between architecture and decorative arts. Conceived as an authentic architectural frame, its scale and depth suggest that it was intended to house a painting of special relevance, possibly in a religious or noble context.
The structure is organized as a monumental portal, with lateral pilasters profusely decorated with vegetal scrolls and acanthus motifs, which ascend with vertical rhythm to a richly carved entablature. The cornice is topped with an elegant curved split pediment, flanked by symmetrical scrolls, a very common resource in Spanish baroque altarpieces.
The gilding, applied using traditional techniques, reinforces the effect of richness and luminosity, designed to interact with natural or candlelight, intensifying the presence of the work it frames. The carving, meticulous and deep, reveals the hand of a specialized workshop, probably linked to the production of altarpieces and liturgical frames.
Because of its typology, ornamentation and formal treatment, this frame is clearly inscribed in the late Spanish Baroque tradition, close to the language of ephemeral architecture and the altarpieces of the Golden Age, where the frame not only acts as a support, but as an essential part of the visual and devotional discourse.
