GASPAR DE QUEVEDO (La Orotava, 1616- c. 1670)
"Portrait of the venerable Fray Juan de Jesús".
Oil on copper with gold frame.
Presented in a 19th century velvet and leather case.
Measurements: 6 x 5 cm.
Small devotional portrait of remarkable psychological intensity, executed by Gaspar de Quevedo, clergyman and painter active in the Canary Islands during the seventeenth century. The work represents Fray Juan de Jesús Hernández y Delgado (1615-1687), a figure of great fame of sanctity in life, whose biography favored his early devotional iconography.
Painted on copper support, the portrait shows the friar in profile, concentrated and austere, with the Franciscan habit treated with a dry and contained brushstroke. This expressive economy, together with the severe modeling of the face and the directed illumination, shows the imprint of Sevillian painting, in particular the echo of Francisco de Zurbarán, reinterpreted here with greater sobriety. The attention to the introspective character of the model responds both to the demands of the baroque portrait and to the spiritual function of the image, intended to promote meditation and private veneration.
The artist's career, trained in Seville and later ordained a priest, explains the synthesis between formal rigor and religious purpose that defines this piece. Inserted in the context of the visual culture of the Canary Islands in the 17th century, the work illustrates the circulation of peninsular and Flemish models, as well as the consolidation of a local school capable of adapting them to a language of its own. Overall, this portrait not only documents the physiognomy of a venerated personage, but also embodies a type of intimate image, intended to preserve and disseminate the spiritual memory of its protagonist.
