The story of Jonah and the whale, one of the best known narratives of the Old Testament, deals with profound themes such as disobedience to God, divine punishment and subsequent redemption. It illustrates the importance of repentance, showing how God forgives even the most wicked if they show genuine contrition, as seen in Nineveh. It also underscores obedience to God, as Jonah, despite trying to flee his mission, could not escape his fate and had to do as he was commanded. Divine mercy is manifested in his compassion towards Jonah and the Ninevites, revealing that it is not limited to one people. Finally, it teaches humility, as the prophet Jonah learned that forgiveness and salvation are universal, not exclusive to those he deemed worthy.
In parallel, Italian painting of the 17th and 18th centuries, especially that of artists such as Luca Giordano, Salvator Rosa and Corrado Giaquinto, is distinguished by its dynamism, dramatism and exuberance. Strongly influenced by Baroque and Rococo, this period shows an interest in religious and mythological themes as well as in landscape and everyday life. The artistic evolution is characterized by a remarkable technical virtuosity, a marked theatricality, a rich chromatic palette, intense hallmarks of light and a bold and loose brushstroke.
Luca Giordano personifies the most exuberant Neapolitan Baroque with his fast, grandiose style dominated by monumentality and theatricality. Salvator Rosa, on the other hand, developed a more personal and philosophical vision, introducing a more dramatic and somber style. Finally, Corrado Giaquinto softened the forms and colors, creating a more delicate and ornamental work, focused on grace and harmony.
