DESCRIPTION

Spanish school; c. 1810- 1820.
"Portrait of a painter".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Presents faults in the frame.
Measurements: 65 x 49 cm; 89 x 64 cm (frame).
This oil painting, made around 1810-1820, presents a long bust portrait of a painter, arranged in three quarters and captured in full creative action. The male figure appears with his arm raised, firmly holding a paintbrush, in a gesture that directly alludes to his artistic practice. The sitter directs his gaze intensely towards the viewer, as if he were in front of the canvas he is painting, involving the observer in the same act of creation represented by the scene. The neutral background reinforces the concentration on the figure and the gesture, eliminating any anecdotal or distracting element.
The composition underlines the dignity of the artist's craft, in a historical moment in which painters were beginning to occupy a more recognized place in the social scale, gradually abandoning their condition of simple artisans to affirm themselves as intellectuals and creators. This portrait, due to its sober and direct language, is inscribed in the tradition of the self-portrait or artist portrait as an affirmation of professional identity, where the gesture of holding the brush becomes a symbol of agency and autonomy.
The work reflects the cultural transition of the early nineteenth century, in which the painter begins to be conceived as a modern subject, aware of his role in the construction of the collective imaginary and of his value in the social and intellectual sphere. Thus, beyond its representative character, the portrait acquires an almost performative dimension, capturing an instant of creation that celebrates the very act of painting as an expression of thought and sensibility.
