In this laborious Flemish painting a monk is shown in a state of deep meditation or concentrated study. His narrowed eyes are fixed on the text, and his posture (with his head resting on his right hand) is one of stillness and recollection. His advanced age (noticeable in his wrinkled forehead and lack of hair) symbolizes the wisdom accumulated through the study of the Scriptures over the years. The painter skillfully handles the ochre and tan shades to create an intimate and warm atmosphere.
Generally in this type of painting, the reading is interpreted as an act of religious piety, usually the Scriptures, the Fathers of the Church, or liturgical texts. These scenes often convey a sense of peace, calm and refuge from the outside world, celebrating the contemplative life.
