The one we now bid is a miniature on parchment made in tempera that shows the transfiguration of Jesus before the apostles, prophets and followers. It follows the famous Raphael's model with some variations.
The composition of this work is clearly divided into two narrative planes, representing successive episodes of the Gospel of Matthew (chapter 17, verses 1-13). In the upper part, the Transfiguration of Jesus Christ on Mount Tabor is narrated: Christ, floating among illuminated clouds, dialogues with the prophets Moses and Elijah, while his three disciples (Peter, James and John) lie on the ground, overwhelmed. In contrast, the lower part shows the Apostles struggling unsuccessfully to cure a demon-possessed child, unable to perform the miracle until the descent of Jesus Christ, freshly transfigured. Although the miniaturist faithfully reproduces the structure of Raphael's work, his undeniable mannerist imprint is revealed in the treatment of light and in the proportions and anatomy of the figures. This miniature is an extraordinary example of Italian art of the late sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries.
