DESCRIPTION
Andalusian school of the second half of the seventeenth century.
"Ecce homo".
Oil on canvas.

Measurements: 58 x 48 cm; 69 x 59 x 7 cm (frame).
The theme of the "Ecce Homo" is one of the most intense and devotional motifs of the Baroque Christian iconography. The treatment of the face, with softened features and restrained expression, seeks emotional empathy rather than extreme dramatism. The traces of martyrdom are present, but integrated with sobriety.
From the stylistic point of view, the work fully responds to the language of the Andalusian Baroque, with a marked use of chiaroscuro that makes the figure emerge from a dark and neutral background. The light, directed and warm, models the body of Christ and accentuates the volumes of the torso, creating a strong physical and spiritual presence. The brushstroke is fused, with smooth transitions between light and shadow, characteristic of Sevillian devotional painting of the time.
The chromatism, dominated by earths, ochers and muted tones, together with the closed composition, reinforce the devotional and contemplative function of the work. This type of image was mainly intended for private devotion, inviting silent meditation on the human and divine suffering of Christ.
Overall, this Ecce Homo is coherently inscribed within the Andalusian pictorial tradition of the 17th century, influenced by masters such as Zurbarán and Murillo, and reflects the spirit of the Counter-Reformation.
