This painting of Saint Peter reveals a close compositional relationship with the famous prototype created by José de Ribera and housed at the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid (inv. no. P001072). The influence of Ribera’s model is particularly evident in the monumental conception of the apostle’s bust, in the close framing of the figure, and in the powerful psychological characterization of the face, where the intensity of the gaze and the restrained expression evoke the Caravaggist-rooted tenebrist naturalism that defined much of the work of the master from Játiva.Compared to the Prado version, this work introduces certain variations, particularly noticeable in the treatment of color and atmosphere. The artist departs from the customary iconographic association of Saint Peter with green and yellow tones to develop a more subdued and profound palette, dominated by muted ochres, earth tones, and areas of intense shadow. This approach accentuates the drama of the composition and reinforces the saint’s meditative and penitential character, in keeping with the devotional sensibility of the Italian and Spanish Baroque.

The execution retains some of the essential features of Ribera’s artistic language: an interest in the naturalistic representation of the face, attention to anatomical detail, and the use of directed lighting that emerges from the dark background to model the figure with great three-dimensional depth.From a material standpoint, the canvas retains an original inscription on its surface—an element of particular documentary interest that provides relevant information for the study of the work, its historical trajectory, and its possible context of production or reception. Due to its adherence to a widely adopted model within European Baroque painting and the expressive intensity with which it portrays the figure of Saint Peter, the work stands as a significant testament to the success achieved by José de Ribera’s painting and the widespread circulation of his devotional compositions among his contemporaries and followers.
