BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Spanish school of the XVIII century.
"San Felipe Neri".
Oil on canvas.
It presents small deterioration.
Measurements: 103 x 75 cm, 110 x 89 cm (frame).

The work represents San Felipe Neri, founder of the Congregation of the Oratory, identified both by the inscription in cartouche in the inferior part and by his iconographic attributes. The saint appears half-length, in a devout attitude, with his hands crossed on his chest and his gaze raised upwards, in a gesture of spiritual recollection. He carries a staff with lilies, symbol of purity, while a golden glow and a break of glory between clouds reinforce the mystical character of the scene.

The composition is articulated in a clear and orderly manner, focusing attention on the figure of the saint, cut out against a dark and cloudy background that contrasts with the luminosity of the golden halo. This resource, inherited from the Baroque, is presented here with greater softness and balance, directing the viewer's gaze towards the serene expression of the face, treated with a restrained naturalism and an evident devotional intention.

From the stylistic point of view, the work is inscribed within the Spanish religious painting of the 18th century, in a context of continuity of the baroque models adapted to a more moderate and classicist sensibility. The brushstroke is loose but controlled, with a careful treatment of the folds and a chromatic range dominated by reds, whites and golden tones, which reinforce the solemnity of the image without resorting to dramatic excesses. This type of representation of founding saints continued to be widely disseminated in the 18th century, especially in convent and oratorian environments, as a vehicle of devotion and moral exemplarity, in keeping with the religious and aesthetic values of the time.
