DESCRIPTION

Madrid or Italian school; XVII century.
"David defeating Goliath".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 29 x 48,5 cm; 73 x 86 cm (frame).
This work represents one of the most widespread episodes of the Old Testament: the triumph of the young shepherd David over the Philistine giant. The scene captures the climactic moment after the victory, when David, erect and serene, holds the severed head of Goliath while the body of the colossus lies collapsed in the foreground. The choice of this moment intensifies the dramatic and moral charge of the story, underlining the victory of faith and intelligence over excessive force.
The composition is organized around a marked diagonal outline that gives dynamism to the scene. The body of Goliath, lying foreshortened and occupying the foreground, introduces the viewer directly into the action, while the figure of David is clearly outlined against an open landscape that suggests spatial depth. In the background, small armed figures expand the narrative and contextualize the episode within the framework of the war.
The treatment of light and color reveals characteristic traits of the Baroque developed in Madrid during the 17th century. The directed lighting concentrates the focus on the main figures, modeling the volumes by means of clear hallmarks and enveloping shadows that intensify the dramatic effect without falling into extreme tenebrism. The palette, dominated by earths, ochers and deep reds, responds to a sober and harmonious sensibility, in keeping with the courtly taste and austere spirituality that permeated much of the Madrid production of the period.
Naturalism is manifested in the anatomical study of the dejected body and in the youthful representation of David, conceived with plausible proportions and restrained gesture. This attention to physical reality, together with compositional clarity and economy of expressive resources, is linked to the qualities of the Madrid school of the sixteenth century, where the influence of Diego Velázquez contributed to consolidate a language based on direct observation and the dignification of the historical or biblical story.
As a whole, the work synthesizes narrative dynamism, chromatic sobriety and controlled dramatism, configuring an image of great visual intensity that reflects the aesthetic and spiritual aspirations of the Baroque in Madrid.
