The refined neoclassical language and the meticulous attention to detail allow us to relate this Virgin of the Rosary with the painting of Vicente López Portaña. The preciousness of the theme stands out, rooted in a tradition that dates back to the 15th century, according to which the Virgin herself taught Saint Dominic to pray the rosary in 1208, urging him to spread this devotion as a powerful weapon against the enemies of the faith. The scene relates how, appearing in the chapel where the saint was praying and holding a rosary in her hand, she showed him its recitation and promised him the conversion of numerous sinners and the obtaining of abundant graces. Prompted by this commission, St. Dominic went out full of fervor with the rosary in his hand, preaching it with great success and bringing many Albigensians back to the Catholic faith.
