BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Austrian or Italian school; XVIII century.
"Portrait of Empress Maria Theresa".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 79 x 62 cm; 93 x 75 cm (frame).
Portrait of the Empress Maria Theresa clearly dependent on a model spread by Georg Desmarées. It is an official portrait of apparatus, in format of long bust, where the figure of Maria Teresa of Austria appears cut out with clarity on a neutral dark bottom, characteristic resource that emphasizes the physical presence and the institutional dignity of the personage. The empress is represented with an attire of great material wealth, probably of embroidered silk and lace, whose meticulous description responds both to the propagandistic intention and to the rococo taste for texture and ornamental detail. The pose, directly inherited from the prototype of Desmarées, combines frontality and slight turn, generating an image of serene and controlled authority. The light treatment, concentrated on the face and torso, softly models the volumes and draws attention to the restrained expression of the sovereign, which conveys a balance between majesty and humanity.
From the stylistic point of view, the work participates in the codes of the courtly portrait of the Germanic Austrian sphere, where French and Italian influences converge. The brushstroke is precise, with a polished finish, and reveals a clear desire for idealized verisimilitude, far from both crude naturalism and fully baroque exuberance. In this sense, the portrait reflects a moment of transition towards more refined and protocol sensibilities, typical of the visual culture of the Enlightenment.
Maria Theresa of Austria (1717-1780) was one of the most influential political figures in 18th century Europe and the only woman to rule the House of Habsburg in her own right. Daughter of Emperor Charles VI, she acceded to power in 1740 by virtue of the Pragmatic Sanction, although her legitimacy was immediately questioned, giving rise to the War of the Austrian Succession. Despite initial difficulties, she managed to consolidate her authority and preserve the essential integrity of her territories.
