DESCRIPTION

Master of Antwerp, ca.1629-1630. Possibly CORNELIS DE VOS (Antwerp, 1584-1651).
"Portrait of young lady with fan".
Oil on panel.
Presents sealing wax seal on the back.
Measurements: 73 x 59 cm; 80,5 x 67 cm (frame).

Elegant feminine portrait ascribed to the environment of Antwerp in the first third of the XVII century, where the influence of the great Flemish portrait tradition linked to Rubens and his circle is noticed. The figure, depicted half-length on a dark background, stands out for the subtlety in the modeling of the flesh tones and the careful description of the lace, a distinctive element of the social status of the sitter.

The treatment of the face, of serene expression and direct look, as well as the delicacy in the execution of the ruff collar and the transparencies, refer to models close to Cornelis de Vos, one of the main portraitists of the Antwerp school. The composition balances sobriety and refinement, with a soft lighting that enhances the psychological presence of the character.

A representative work of Flemish bourgeois portraiture, where attention to detail and formal elegance are combined with a remarkable sensitivity in capturing the individual.

Cornelis de Vos was an important figure of the Antwerp school, closely linked to Peter Paul Rubens, with whom he collaborated on several occasions. A member of the guild of St. Luke from 1608, he developed an outstanding career as a portraitist of the Flemish bourgeoisie, distinguished by the psychological intensity of his models and the chromatic richness of his compositions. His work is preserved in important international collections and museums, including the Prado Museum, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (KMSKA) and the Louvre.
