DESCRIPTION
Spanish school of the XVII century.
"Virgin with child".
Oil on copper.
Measurements: 14 x 11 cm, 19 x 16,5 cm (frame).
The work represents the Virgin Mary holding the Child Jesus in a composition of intimate and devotional character. The figure of the Virgin, of inclined face and sweet and melancholic expression, directs her look towards the Child, establishing an affective relation loaded with tenderness. She wears a reddish tunic and greenish mantle, traditional colors of her iconography, while a light veil frames her head. The Child, naked and leaning on his mother's lap, raises his gaze towards her in a gesture that reinforces the emotional bond between the two figures.
The scene is built on a dark and neutral background, which concentrates the attention on the main group and accentuates the effect of recollection. The soft lighting models the faces and flesh tones with delicacy, while the folds of the drapery are resolved with a relatively loose brushstroke. There are signs of age on the pictorial surface, such as craquelure and wear, which do not prevent us from recognizing the expressive quality of the whole.
Inscribed within the Spanish school of the 18th century, the work responds to the models of Baroque painting, where religiosity is manifested through close and humanized images. In contrast to more solemn representations, here the affective dimension of the Virgin and Child is emphasized, in line with Counter-Reformation spirituality, which sought to encourage devotion through accessible and emotional scenes. In this context, the image not only fulfills an aesthetic function, but also a devotional one: it invites contemplation and empathy from the spectator. The tenderness of the gesture, the physical proximity between mother and child and the compositional sobriety place the work within a tradition deeply rooted in Spanish Baroque painting, where the sacred is expressed through the human.
