DESCRIPTION
Italo-Greek school of the XVII century.
"Virgin with child".
Oil on panel with gilded wood architecture.
Measurements: 19 x 15 cm, 34 x 23 cm (frame).
The work represents the Virgin and Child in a devotional format, integrated in a carved architectural frame that is an essential part of the whole. The Virgin appears half-length, with a slightly inclined face and a serene and recollected expression, while holding the Child, dressed in a light tunic and arranged with a certain frontality. The relationship between both figures is intimate, but contained, in accordance with their sacred character.
The formal treatment clearly responds to the Byzantine tradition: elongated faces, deep looks and a golden background that eliminates any spatial reference, placing the scene in a transcendent environment. The polychrome, dominated by intense reds and golds, reinforces the symbolic dimension of the image. The frame, with Gothic-inspired finials, introduces a Western element that contrasts with the rigidity and spirituality of the figures.
Dating from the 17th century, the work is part of the post-Byzantine production, where traditional iconographic models are maintained with little variation. However, the combination of Eastern and Western elements suggests a context of cultural contact, probably in an Italo-Greek or Cretan environment under Venetian influence.
In this context, the painting does not seek innovation, but continuity and devotional function, acting as a cult image intended for contemplation and private religious practice, maintaining an intentionally archaizing aesthetic that reinforces its sacred character.
