The composition presents the Virgin holding the Child in a gesture of closeness and tenderness, emphasized by the soft contact of the faces and the low gaze of Mary, which accentuates the contemplative character of the scene. The use of a rich red mantle, treated with meticulousness in the folds and shades of light, contrasts with the pearly softness of the flesh tones, generating a balance between chromatic intensity and spiritual serenity. The background, articulated by a landscape that opens up through the vegetation, introduces depth and places the scene in an idealized natural environment, in keeping with the Nordic tradition of integrating the sacred into a recognizable world.
The work closely follows the model established by his father, Ambrosius Benson, in his Virgin and Child in the Museo de Bellas Artes in Seville (CE0020P). This filiation is evident both in the typology of the figures, oval faces, expressive sweetness and delicate sfumato, and in the compositional organization, which favors intimacy and restrained grace. Willem does not limit himself, however, to reproducing his father's model, but introduces a greater softness in the modeling and a more accentuated sensitivity to the effects of light, which suggests an evolution within the same pictorial language.
The artist's trajectory explains to a great extent this stylistic continuity. Son of Ambrosius Benson, Willem was trained in his father's workshop in Bruges, inheriting both his models and his network of artistic diffusion, especially to the Spanish market. This connection explains the presence of works linked to his circle in Seville. Despite his talent, his life was marked by recurring economic difficulties, which led to debt convictions and, finally, to his banishment from the county of Flanders. He settled in Middelburg, where he died in 1574. Also documented as the author of religious works for local institutions, such as the brotherhood of St. Barbara in the church of St. Savior of Bruges or the parish of Varsenare, Willem Benson represents a significant figure within the second generation of Flemish painters of the sixteenth century, whose production combines the heritage of the great family workshops with a refined devotional sensibility. In this Virgin and Child, this synthesis reaches a particularly successful expression, where tradition, affection and spirituality merge in an image of profound religious resonance.
