BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

Circle of ALESSANDRO MAGNASCO (Genoa, 1667- 1749), Northern Italy, 18th century.
"Monks in the refectory".
Oil on canvas. Relined.
Measurements: 71 x 93 cm; 85 x 106 cm (frame).
The painting reveals a clear affinity with Magnasco's visual universe, both for its expressive treatment of matter and for the restless and spiritual atmosphere that pervades the scene. The composition places the viewer inside a monastic refectory, a space of recollection and daily discipline, here converted into the scene of a profoundly dynamic visual experience. Far from a static or ceremonious representation, the religious are captured through a vibrant succession of gestures and attitudes that seem to dissolve in the half-light. This sensation of constant mobility is achieved through a rapid, fragmented and nervous brushstroke, an essential characteristic of Magnasco's language and of his artistic environment. The light, applied by means of small bright accents, builds the figures more by chromatic vibration than by linear definition, giving the scene an almost visionary character.
The style refers directly to the Lombard and Genoese pictorial culture of the early eighteenth century, marked by a growing technical freedom and a renewed interest in the emotional and theatrical aspects of representation. In this sense, the work participates in a tradition that finds echoes both in the dramatic expressiveness of Il Morazzone and in the Venetian chromatic freedom of Sebastiano Ricci. Likewise, the scenographic construction of the space and the almost fantastic treatment of the architectures evoke certain models of Salvatore Rosa and Claudio de Lorena, although reinterpreted from a much more restless and modern sensibility.
One of the most singular aspects of Alessandro Magnasco was precisely his ability to transform apparently humble scenes, convent interiors, gatherings of friars, beggars, hermits or visionaries, into compositions charged with psychological tension and poetic resonance. In contrast to the descriptive naturalism predominant in much of the Italian painting of his time, Magnasco developed a deeply personal language, characterized by stylized figures, broken rhythms and an almost spectral atmosphere. It is no coincidence that the critics of the 19th century came to consider him a "romantic painter" avant la lettre, noticing in his work a sensibility ahead of his time.
Because of its workmanship and formal characteristics, the work should be understood within the circle close to Magnasco, probably linked to artists or followers active in the Lombard-Genoese environment during the eighteenth century. Beyond the specific attribution, the painting testifies to the wide influence exerted by Il Lissandrino in the northern Italian school, as well as the extraordinary originality of a pictorial language that, even today, continues to fascinate for its expressive intensity and its surprising modernity.
