DESCRIPTION
19th-century Spanish school. Based on models by FRANCISCO ANTOLÍNEZ Y SARABIA (Seville, c. 1645 – Madrid, 1700).
"Martyrdom."
Oil on canvas mounted on panel.
Measurements: 27.5 x 39.5 cm.
This painting, created by an anonymous artist of the 19th-century Spanish school, depicts the martyrdom of a Christian saint assisted by an angelic apparition. The scene shows the martyr accompanied by a female figure while a Roman soldier participates in the execution, and an angel descends amid luminous clouds as a symbol of heavenly reward and the triumph of faith over death.
The work reflects a clear inspiration from Madrid Baroque painting and can be linked to the models of Francisco Antolínez, especially due to the theatrical nature of the composition, the contrast between areas of shadow and supernatural light, and the presence of heavenly visions that reinforce the devotional message. Rather than a direct copy, it is likely a 19th-century recreation of Baroque formulas, created within the historicist movement that led many 19th-century artists to revive models from the Spanish Golden Age.
