DESCRIPTION

Attributed to NICOLAES PIETERSZ BERCHEM (Haarlem, 1620 – Amsterdam, 1683)
"Italian Landscape with a Small Bridge"

With a 19th-century gilded frame.

Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem produced several versions of this “Italian Landscape with a Bridge.” One of them, dated 1656, is housed in the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. Another, smaller version is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, cited in C. M. Kauffmann’s bibliography, *Catalogue of Foreign Paintings*. I. Before 1800, London, Victoria and Albert Museum, 1973, p. 30, cat. no. 29.

The composition in question is fully in keeping with the Italianate style of Berchem, one of the great Dutch masters of 17th-century pastoral landscape painting. The stone bridge, the classical statue mounted on a pedestal, the flock in the foreground, and the travelers crossing the scene come together to form an idealized vision of the rural Mediterranean world, where nature, ancient architecture, and pastoral life blend into a serene, golden atmosphere.

More than a simple genre scene, the work embodies that southern Arcadia that Dutch painters imagined based on Italy: a luminous, temperate, and cultured landscape, where ruins and paths become symbols of memory, passage, and civilization. The viewer’s gaze glides from the group of animals and figures in the foreground toward the bridge, the watercourse, and the distance, creating a carefully layered space.

Also noteworthy are the atmospheric treatment, the cloud formations, and the delicate modulation of light that envelops the scene. The animals and figures have been rendered with technical confidence and a sense of volume. The work retains remarkable spatial coherence and a balanced mastery of tonal values.

Nicolaes Pietersz Berchem was a leading exponent of Italianate Dutch painting during the Golden Age. Trained in Haarlem, he developed a style that enjoyed great international success, characterized by landscapes bathed in warm light, featuring ruins and shepherds, such as the one shown here. His work was highly prized by European collectors in the 17th and 18th centuries and exerted a wide-ranging influence on later landscape painting.

Berchem is represented in major international collections, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg, the Louvre in Paris, the National Gallery in London, the Prado Museum, the Mauritshuis in The Hague, the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, and numerous European and American public collections.
