This work depicts a military equestrian scene in the style of Velázquez, typical of 18th-century historical and genre painting in Spain, which was strongly influenced by 17th-century Madrid Baroque. It depicts a gathering of military commanders or nobles on horseback in a vast, open landscape beneath a cloudy sky. In the center, a figure on foot removes his hat in a gesture of respect toward the mounted officer, while on the right, a drummer and a standard-bearer with an unfurled flag mark the military presence. Notable are the military uniforms from the Habsburg era (valonas, wide-brimmed hats with feathers, crimson sashes, and high boots), as well as the simplified treatment of the backgrounds and the grayish and ochre tones of the horizon.
