The iconography of Saint Veronica became widely popular in the 16th-century Valencian school, closely linked to the development of a style of painting characterized by intense spirituality- In this context, the influence of Juan de Juanes proved decisive, establishing a model of serene beauty and profound emotion that would dominate Valencian art for much of the century and would be repeatedly reinterpreted by his circle and followers.This work clearly follows this prestigious model. Depicted in bust form against a neutral background, the saint draws the viewer’s full attention to her expression and the folds of the veil covering her hair—characteristic elements of the artistic language developed by Juan de Juanes. The idealization of the face, the softness of the modeling, and the chromatic balance demonstrate the assimilation of the principles of the Italian Renaissance, reinterpreted in Valencia.
