DESCRIPTION

FRANCISCO NÚÑEZ LOSADA (Candelario, Salamanca, 1889 - Madrid, 1973).
"Lake landscape".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower margin.
Presents damages in the frame.
Measurements: 90 x 130 cm; 104 x 144 x 6 cm (frame).

Lake landscape of great amplitude and enveloping atmosphere. The composition is organized in successive planes that lead the look from the shore and the humid zones of the first term to the calm water of the lake and the mountain, creating a deep sensation of space and silence. The brushstroke is loose and nuanced, with glazes and muted tones that reinforce the atmospheric character of the scene. The palette, dominated by grays, greens and soft blues, transmits a diffuse and changing light, evoking a landscape of cold and contemplative climate, treated with sensitivity and balance.

A landscape painter and restorer, Francisco Núñez Losada is mainly known today for his landscapes of the Picos de Europa and other alpine geography. In 1934 he obtained a second medal in the National Competition with his painting "Frías". The Spanish Civil War was an inevitable break in his production, although he soon resumed his artistic activity after the war, and in 1940 he submitted several works to the competition to select the Spanish representation at the International Exposition in New York and San Francisco. Official recognition followed in these years of maturity: he received the Encomienda and Plaque of the Order of Alfonso X the Wise in 1951, he won medals of honor in important competitions, and in 1968 the Hispanic Society named him a corresponding member. Núñez Losada is currently represented in several Spanish regional museums, such as the one in Salamanca, but also in others in Berlin, North and South America, Lisbon, the Philippines, etc.
