DESCRIPTION
Flemish school of the late nineteenth century, following models of the seventeenth century.
"Landscape with peasant scene".
Oil on canvas.
Signed "Jan L. Rom" in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 63.7 x 82.4 cm; 80.5 x 99.5 cm (frame).
The work presents a wide rural landscape animated by diverse scenes of the peasant life. In the foreground appears a cart loaded with hay pulled by horses, while several figures walk along the road accompanied by cattle, forming a scene of daily character. The composition is articulated by a large tree in the foreground that frames the view and leads the eye towards a luminous valley dotted with small buildings and hills in the distance.
The atmospheric treatment of the sky, together with the meticulous description of the figures and elements of the landscape, refers to the tradition of Flemish Baroque landscape, in the line of artists and workshops close to Jan Brueghel the Younger or Jan Wildens, where the interest in the rural narrative is combined with a careful spatial construction and a warm chromatic range.
