DESCRIPTION
FRIEDRICH FERDINAND KOCH (Landau, Germany, 1863-1923).
"Woman with dog".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 62 x 74 cm; 77 x 89 cm (frame).
In this canvas, Friedrich Ferdinand Koch presents a clearly impressionist scene, starring a wide wooded landscape covered with grasses and wild flowers. In the middle of the dense vegetation stands out the figure of a bourgeois lady, elegantly dressed in white holding a red umbrella, accompanied by a dog. From the formal point of view, the work is distinguished by its marked attention to light and atmosphere, as well as by the use of loose and visible brushstrokes that provide dynamism and a sense of spontaneity.
The rise of French Impressionism had a notable impact in Germany in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, although its reception was more gradual and adapted to the local context. German artists became interested in capturing light, color and plein air painting, inspired by figures such as Monet and Renoir, but without completely abandoning the academic tradition and the taste for more defined drawing. Cities such as Berlin and Munich became centers of diffusion, thanks to international exhibitions and the role of gallery owners who introduced French painting to the German market.
