BID HISTORY

DESCRIPTION

European school of the XIX century.
"Still life of fruit and painter's palette".
Oil on canvas.
Illegible signature.
Measurements: 40 x 61 cm, 61 x 82 cm (frame).

The work presents a still life of intimate character, centered on the utensils and objects of the pictorial work. In the foreground stands out a palette loaded with pigments, where the remains of ochre, red and yellow colors are arranged in an almost organic way, accompanied by brushes supported in an informal way. Next to them, several apples rest on the surface, introducing a traditional element within the still life genre. In the background, a dark vase and other small vessels are cut out on an undefined space, treated with a dense and vibrant pictorial matter.

The composition is built from warm and deep tones, dominated by browns, reddish and muted greens, which generate a recollected and almost introspective atmosphere. The lighting, soft and directed, falls on the main objects, highlighting the texture of the palette and the volume of the fruits. The brushstroke is loose and visible, with a clear material intention, especially on the surface of the palette, where the paint seems to accumulate and acquire prominence as matter in itself.

Inscribed within the European school of the nineteenth century, the work is related to a tradition of still life that transcends the mere representation of objects to enter into a reflection on the act of painting itself. The presence of the palette and brushes introduces a self-referential dimension, turning the scene into a kind of "studio still life", where the creative process is implicit. In the artistic context of the time, this type of composition reflects a growing interest in the materiality of painting and in the more immediate aspects of artistic practice. The work is thus situated in a line that, departing from the academic tradition, begins to explore a greater technical and expressive freedom, anticipating concerns that will be fundamental in modern painting.
