The contrast between the dark background and the luminous openness of the landscape in the background adds depth and dynamism to the scene, while the curtain and the column reinforce the scenographic character of the composition. This type of arrangement, of clear baroque heritage, was widely reinterpreted by Italian painting of the 19th century within a historicist taste.
