The representation of children in English painting in the early nineteenth century occupies a significant place in the development of portraiture and genre painting, in a context marked by the transition between the legacy of the eighteenth century and the emergence of romantic sensibilities. At this stage, childhood was no longer conceived solely as a preparatory phase for adult life, but became a subject worthy of aesthetic and emotional attention in its own right, associated with ideas of innocence, purity and naturalness.
Artists such as Thomas Lawrence or John Hoppner developed children's portraits in which they combined the elegance inherited from aristocratic portraiture with a greater freshness and spontaneity in the attitude of the models. These works, often commissioned by elite families, show children in less rigid poses, with more natural gestures and sometimes integrated into landscape or domestic settings that emphasize their link to nature and everyday life.
