La perla, Sagrada Familia con San Juanito is based on the famous composition known by Rafael Sanzio, one of the most admired images of the Italian Renaissance for its compositional delicacy and spirituality. In this interpretation, the artist recreates the scene of the Holy Family accompanied by St. John the Baptist, maintaining the classical balance and tenderness characteristic of the original model.
The painting reflects Milagros Millán Pérez's interest in copying masterpieces and in the transmission of the classical artistic tradition within the Spanish painting of her time. Her work shows a careful technical execution and a remarkable respect for the academic values, especially in the treatment of the figures, the chromatic softness and the devotional atmosphere of the scene.
Milagros Millán Pérez was a Madrid painter active between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, linked to the academic artistic environment of the Spanish capital. Resident in Atocha Street in Madrid, she participated with several works in the National Exhibitions of Fine Arts held in Madrid in 1895 and 1904, fundamental competitions for Spanish artists of the time and showcase of academic and genre painting of the time. A disciple of Juan Millán, she developed a painting with a marked traditional sensibility, with a special interest in religious themes and compositions inspired by the great masters of the Renaissance and Baroque periods. Within this artistic context, Milagros Millán Pérez also stood out as a copyist, a very common practice among academic painters at the end of the 19th century, both as a training exercise and because of the demand for reproductions of famous works.
