GEORGES MASSON (France, 1875–1948).
"The Marne at Châlons," 1896.
Oil on canvas.

Measurements: 53 x 70 cm; 92 x 111 x 6 cm (frame).
A serene view of the Marne River as it flows through Châlons, opening up placidly across a wide expanse of water that draws the eye toward the architectural silhouette in the background. The clusters of trees on either side frame the scene and accentuate the balance between depth, stillness, and tranquility.
The work stands out for its sensitivity to light and its delicate treatment of reflections, which transform the river into the visual and poetic axis of the composition. The landscape draws on a late-19th-century French naturalist tradition, attentive to the observation of the surroundings, atmospheric effects, and the serenity of riverine spaces.
Georges Masson was a French painter active from the late 19th century through the first half of the 20th century. His painting reflects a naturalist and regionalist sensibility, centered on the poetic evocation of the landscape.
