This work is a valuable testament to the architecture and daily life of early 20th-century Cuba. In it, Eduardo Morales depicts an urban scene dominated by a building with a strikingly monumental presence, whose colonial forms and understated volumes evoke Havana’s architectural legacy. The composition is balanced by the inclusion of small figures passing through the square and a loaded donkey—elements that lend scale, dynamism, and a human dimension to the whole. Morales employs a warm palette of ochres, earth tones, and pinks, reinforcing the luminous atmosphere characteristic of the Caribbean. The restrained and precise brushwork reveals his interest in descriptive accuracy; however, rather than documenting a specific place, the artist constructs an idealized image of the Cuban urban landscape, where architecture and popular customs coexist in harmony. Painted in 1901, shortly after the end of the Cuban War of Independence, the painting reflects a moment of historical transition in which the country was beginning to redefine its identity.
Eduardo Morales (Havana, 1868–1938) was one of the most representative Cuban painters of the early decades of the Republic. He studied at the San Alejandro Academy, where he was a student of the landscape painter Valentín Sanz Carta. His artistic training was interrupted when he joined the Cuban War of Independence in 1895. After the conflict ended, he joined the police force, balancing this work with painting for years, until he devoted himself fully to art after his retirement. He exhibited at the first Fine Arts Salons held in Havana, receiving favorable reviews from critics. His work *Volanta* was included in the historic exhibition *Three Hundred Years of Art in Cuba*, while his painting *Carretas* (1912) was part of the exhibition *19th-Century Spanish and Cuban Paintings*, held in Salamanca in 1999. Today, Eduardo Morales is considered a leading figure in Cuban landscape painting for his contribution to preserving the visual memory of Cuba in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
