The landscape and people of Mallorca were the focus of Joan Fuster’s artistic interests. As in this painting, he depicted the Mallorcan landscape with great skill, using his characteristic impressionist technique—loose and bold.
Trained in the academic realism of Ricardo Anckermann, Fuster evolved toward the bourgeois and intimist strand of Modernism, influenced by Rusiñol and Casas. A close friend of Rusiñol and Mir, Fuster is today considered one of the finest representatives of Balearic Luminism. A gold medalist at the 1903 International Exhibition in Marseille, he remained particularly active during the 1920s, when he exhibited in Palma, Mahón, Barcelona, Madrid, Munich, and Buenos Aires. He also taught at the School of Arts and Crafts in Palma. From 1921 onward, in contrast to the dominance of Novecentism and the avant-garde, he adopted a Luminist style focused on genre scenes and landscapes. Drawn to open, uncluttered, and luminous spaces, he developed a personal, fluid, and versatile style of painting. His works are held by the Council of Mallorca and the Es Baluard Museum in Palma, as well as in major private collections. Awards: Silver Medal at the Balearic Exhibition in Sóller (1887), Gold Medal at the International Exhibition in Marseille (1903), Honorable Mentions at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in Madrid (1904 and 1906). Exhibitions and tributes: Sala Goya (1918); Sala Pares (1917, 1922, 1926, 1930); Galería Areñas in Barcelona (1928); Galería Layetana (1929); Círculo Bellas Artes in Palma (1945); Quint Gallery (1947); Centenary Exhibition (1970); Sala Capitular de La Cartuja (1970); Sa Llonja (1995); and as part of the group exhibition “Serra de Tramuntana” at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris (2015).
