“The Procession.”

A leading figure in Valencian costumbrismo, José Benavent Calatayud specialized in depicting Valencia as it was at the time, including its rural landscapes, urban views, and local characters. His costumbrismo reveals a certain affinity with other artists of the period, such as Agrasot and Benlliure. In this work, he presents a scene set within a courtyard with a sandy floor. The main figures—a group of men offering wine to two Valencian women—have been delicately rendered, thus demonstrating Benavent’s artistic skill. Traditionally, Spanish painting and literature have focused on folk customs and characters. The arrival of Romanticism revitalized this movement, infusing the Spanish tradition with the vision that foreigners had of our people—a result of the snobbery of a Europeanized and liberal national bourgeoisie that, also due to foreign influence and in line with Romantic trends, turned its gaze toward the people and monuments of the past. While this trend was widespread throughout Spain, it was particularly pronounced in Andalusia, as this region was a dream destination for foreigners, and it was there that the influence of their perception of Spaniards and their distinctive customs was felt most strongly.
A painter and illustrator, José Benavent trained at the San Carlos School of Fine Arts in Valencia and specialized in genre paintings depicting local customs. He was particularly appreciated for the delicacy of his brushwork, which reveals a marked interest in rendering details with precision. In his dictionary, “El Barón de Aclahalí” describes Benavent as a cultured man with a kind demeanor, noting that his only “flaws”—if they could even be called that—were the very qualities for which he was honored on several occasions. However, we know that he also painted portraits, although these were almost always linked to his costumbrista themes. His primary interest was depicting Valencia as it was at the time, including its rural landscapes, urban views, and local characters. His genre paintings reveal a certain affinity with other artists of the time, such as Agrasot and Benlliure. His works are currently on display at the Museu de l’Almodí, as well as in various private collections.
