This work clearly reflects the unique aesthetic evolution of Luis Martínez Pedro, one of the great masters of 20th-century Cuban modernism. It brings together the teachings of the European avant-garde with a deeply personal artistic language, the result of a process of synthesis that defined an entire generation of Cuban artists committed to forging their own visual identity.Twentieth-century Cuban painting experienced one of its most splendid periods thanks to those artists who, after completing their training in Europe and the United States, returned to the island to reinterpret the currents of modernism from a genuinely Cuban perspective. This dialogue between tradition, experimentation, and local context gave rise to one of Latin America’s most significant artistic schools, whose international influence remains as strong as ever.

A key figure in Cuba’s artistic renewal, he shared the spotlight with essential figures such as René Portocarrero and Amelia Peláez, contributing decisively to the consolidation of a school that transcended the island’s borders and achieved international recognition.His training began in 1929 at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, where he began studying architecture but abandoned those studies shortly thereafter to devote himself fully to artistic creation. In 1930, he moved to the United States, studying at Tulane University and later at the School of Art and Crafts at the same institution, where he specialized in design. After the fall of Gerardo Machado’s dictatorship, he returned to Cuba and joined the prestigious advertising agency Mestre y Compañía, an experience that significantly enriched his mastery of composition and visual language.

His first exhibition took place in 1937 at the Centro de Dependientes in Havana, marking the beginning of an upward trajectory that would culminate in his first solo exhibition at the Lyceum Lawn Tennis Club in 1943. During these years, he was intensely active both artistically and intellectually, contributing to the influential magazine *Orígenes* and serving as president of the Association of Painters and Sculptors of Cuba. In 1948, he also founded the Latin American Advertising Techniques organization, reflecting his constant interest in innovation in the fields of design and visual communication. A turning point in his career came after his travels through South America, where he was introduced to concrete art. This experience redefined his artistic language and led him to join, alongside Sandú Darié, the founding members of the historic group Los Diez Pintores Concretos, a collective that was fundamental to the development of geometric abstraction in Cuba and an essential reference point within Latin American modernism.In recognition of his exceptional career, in 1981 he received the Félix Varela Order, the highest cultural distinction awarded by the Republic of Cuba. Today, his works are part of major international private collections and prestigious institutions, including the Cisneros Fontanals Art Foundation (CIFO), the Salvador Allende Museum of Solidarity, and the National Museum of Fine Arts of Cuba.
