A few walnuts, most of them closed, some with the shell broken, rest on a table whose color coincides with the background, so that they seem to remain suspended on a black background. With this, the author seems to pay homage to the Spanish Baroque school, although he goes to extremes with the tenebrist hallmarks of the still lifes on black backgrounds of Zurbarán and other masters of the Golden Age.
Eufemiano, painter, draftsman, engraver, teacher, was trained from an early age in Seville, first at the School of Arts and Crafts and later at the School of Fine Arts of Santa Isabel de Hungría. The Sevillian artistic environment praises him as an indisputable value since his first exhibitions (Ateneo, Congregación de los Luises, Sala Velázquez) at the beginning of the 40's, in which he shows an unquestionable mastery of oil painting and drawing, with frequent recourse to regional themes. After his military service, he lived in the Spanish protectorate of Morocco between 1945 and 1947, fascinated by the territory and its culture, which are intensely reflected in his painting. Subsequently, his return to Seville affirms his local recognition; the young painter faces significant compositions, relief figures, genre scenes and, using the resources of the great Sevillian baroque painting, takes the first steps in the search for his own language (in this regard, remember his unique Portrait of a drawer and a can, where he uses his 'classical' technical resources to face a conceptually avant-garde composition). He thus demonstrates the independence and self-confidence that will characterize his entire career.
