JOAN ROVIRA GARCIA (Barcelona, 1936 - 1993).
"Village of the Costa Brava".
Oil on canvas.
Signed in the lower right corner.
Measurements: 50 x 65 cm; 62 x 79 cm (frame).
Joan Rovira Garcia represents a lively Mediterranean coastal scene, where architecture, sea and daily life are integrated in a natural way. The composition opens towards the beach, with the beached boats in the foreground and the farmhouse lined up along the promenade, structuring the space in a diagonal that leads the eye towards the horizon. The central palm tree acts as a vertical axis and point of visual balance. The brushstroke is loose and dynamic, typical of an outdoor painting, and the palette is clear and warm.
Joan Rovira García studied at the School of Arts and Crafts in Barcelona and furthered his studies in life drawing at the Cercle Artístic de Sant Lluc and the Reial Cercle Artístic. He began his artistic career in the late fifties, after coming into contact with Anglada Camarasa in Pollença. From the beginning of the 1960s he participated in numerous competitions and group exhibitions, winning prizes such as the Rafael Llimona Prize for young painters at the Sala Parés (1963) and the Van Gogh Prize for drawing (1967). From 1966 onwards he held solo exhibitions in various galleries in Barcelona, including the Sala Parés, as well as in other Spanish cities.
