The Belgian artist Jan Imberechts offers us a work of deep emotional charge that is aligned with the aesthetic rupture of the European avant-gardes of the 20th century: formally it moves away from the conventional portrait to enter the field of symbolism and realism. Open reading, the canvas presents a strong contrast between the male figure, marked by the passage of time, and the female figure with stylized features. It represents a scene of consolation or farewell, where youth supports the fragility of the old man. At the chromatic level, ochre, golden and greenish tones predominate, enveloping the scene in an unreal, almost dreamlike light.
