DESCRIPTION
JOSEP SARQUELLA ESCOBET (Llagostera, Girona, 1928 - Palamós, Girona, 2000).
"Scene of fishermen", 1977.
Oil on canvas.
Signed and dated.
Measurements: 50 × 100 cm.
The work collects with great economy of means a coastal scene animated by figures of fishermen and bathers, resolved by a loose and synthetic brushstroke that captures the essence of the moment. The composition, open and luminous, is articulated through diagonals that lead the eye towards the maritime background, where boats and port activity are insinuated.
Sarquella demonstrates here his affinity with the impressionist tradition, transferring to the canvas an immediate, almost sketched vision, where freshness and spontaneity prevail over descriptive detail.
Josep Sarquella settled in Barcelona in 1949, where he trained at the Círculo Artístico and Sant Lluc. From his first individual exhibition in 1958 he developed an active career with exhibitions in Spain and abroad, being awarded on several occasions. He mainly cultivated landscape, marine and Mediterranean urban scenes, and his work is represented in Spanish museums and collections.
